Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week 2020 is a chance for the UK to focus on mental health.
Watch the video here.

This year's theme is kindness, with the week running from 18 - 24 May.
The focus on kindness is a response to the coronavirus outbreak, which is having a big impact on people's mental health.
Some people have mental health conditions like depression or anxiety, which means they have feelings that won't go away and which start to really affect day-to-day life.
Mark Rowland, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation, said: "We want to use Mental Health Awareness Week to celebrate the thousands of acts of kindness that are so important to our mental health. And we want to start a discussion on the kind of society we want to shape as we emerge from this pandemic."
Have you carried out any acts of kindness recently? Let us know in the comments below.

Metaphors and Similes

Good morning Year 5, hope you all had a lovely weekend and are ready to get back to learning this week. I know some of you are feeling a little unmotivated, which is natural not being in school for so long, but doing a little bit everyday will really help you for when you do return back to school.

Today I would like you to try having a go at this activity about similes and metaphors.

Watch the videos and then try to the 2 tasks. Let me know how you get on!

Historic Heroes

Good morning Year 5, hope you are having a wonderful week so far and being safe and positive as much as possible.

Today I wanted to share with you a man that I admire greatly. A man with principal, passion and courage. He was born Cassius Clay and later in life converted to Islam and became 'the greatest' -  Muhammad Ali.

He became a boxer at the age of about 11 and went on to become the world's greatest at a time when history was making a real change in America. It was during the civil rights movement that Muhammad was at the height of his career and he had a lot more to fight for than just his opponent in the ring.

One of the things I love about him the most is that despite being a strong athlete, when America went to war, he refused to fight. He believed in peace, not war.

Muhammad Ali was quoted “I’m not going to fight in this white man’s war, to free people half away around the world. You (whites) won't even fight for me in this country, I’m being oppressed right here.” He was forced to surrender his title and ban from boxing, then also jailed.

Today I would like you to think of who your heroes in society are and write about why you admire them and if they have any impact on your life.

You can share them in the comments or send in your work to us.

Writing a powerful speech

Now, I know that what we are hearing on the news is all a bit confusing. The rules are confusing, the messages are confusing and it really isn't helping anyone. What do you have to say about it? For your next writing piece, I would like you to write a speech to our government telling them how you feel.

First, let's watch an example of a powerful speech to help us get into the mood.

SO, what is needed for a powerful speech?

  • A - alliteration
  • F - facts
  • O - opinion
  • R - rhetorical questions
  • E - emotive language
  • S - statistics
  • T - triples (repeating your point three times but in different ways)

Your speech needs to demand answers, explain how you are feeling, insist on change, and simply tell them you are NOT satisfied with how this situation has been dealt with.

Once you have written them, you can either send them into us on email or send us a video of your performing the speech for us to see.

debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com

This is one written by Della today:

My name is Della,I am ten years old,and I think the situation you have put us in is all wrong. You say that you are doing it right. You say that everything is going to be okay. But will it really? How do you know that? Can humans adjust from being two metres apart and staying at home to holding hands and going to school in a few hours? I don't think so. The situation we are in is not comfortable and that just makes it worse. You need to think about how you are dealing with lockdown. I'm not the only one who is feeling this way.

And this one is by Tyon:

Year 5 Updates

I was lucky enough to get to speak to some of you last week and check in with your parents, I love hearing how you are doing and what you getting up to. I know we are all missing school and our friends but let's hope it won't be much longer now. The important thing is to stay safe and positive as best we can. If you are feeling down, let yourself feel down and embrace the emotions. Have a cry, listen to some music or go for a walk.  It's all part of the process of coping and you are all doing amazing so far!

Thanks for sending these in Sienna, Della, Tyon and someone else you need to guess...

Click here to take you to today's lesson on time zones, watch the video, and then try the quiz in activity 1 after.

Fractions of amounts

Good morning Year 5, I hope you all slept well and are staying positive. Missing you all very much and thinking about you every day.

So, carrying on with fractions this week, we are going to now consolidate how to find fractions of amounts. First, watch this video:

The rule is divide by the denominator, multiply by the numerator.

5/6 of 30 is 30 divided by 6 which is 5, then multiply by 5 and your answer is 25.

So 5/6 of 30 is 25.

Staying in touch with our cultures

I love that we live in a city that is populated with such a wide variety of cultures, religions, beliefs, and ethnic backgrounds. I was lucky enough to grow up in a family of different cultures, my mum being English and my dad being Turkish. I love that I get to call 2 countries home and that, in this great city, I'm able to celebrate my culture freely. This is not the case everywhere.

As we grow up, especially when younger, it can be really hard to stay in touch with our cultures and our family traditions. We don't always get the opportunity enough to talk about them and share them with our peers. Being able to understand cultures and beliefs is vital to keeping peace in our communities, especially at a time like now where we are relying on those around us to help us.

I thought it would be a nice idea for people to share parts of their cultures that they are proud of, or enjoy or which they celebrate. The more we understand each other as humans, the better we can communicate on all levels.

I will start by sharing with you this bread I made on the weekend. Bread is a part of every Turkish meal. Meals are what unite Turkish families. Bread is for everyone in Turkey both rich or poor. It is essential for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This bread reminds me of the village where we have a house in Turkey and being with my family who I am separated from at the moment and not sure when I will see again. But it also reminds me of all the good times I had there and will have there again soon, so I'm trying to stay positive.

I would love for you to share something with our class about your culture or belief. You can either send us a photo or just write something in the comments sections.

Extended writing

So I know some of you wouldn't have written much in a  while so I thought it would be a good idea to try some this week because if we do return to school we don't want to have to start from scratch.

I would like you to watch this short film clip and then carry on writing from the point it finishes. You can either write it from 1st person or 3rd person.

You will need to include:

- expanded noun phrases
- prepositional phrases
- similes and metaphors
- fronted adverbials

Here is my example for you to magpie:

An endless pit of doom lurched rapidly towards my face, the sharpness of the teeth filled with hate only inches from piercing my skin. I threw myself against the ground landing hard on my shoulder. The beast bellowed in anger. Quick, think fast. I drew for another arrow but a paw the size of my shield was striking in my direction. Suddenly, I felt a pain like no other. Time stopped still. My heartbeat paused. The thud to the floor echoed in my ears. I took what I thought might be my last breath. But then...

Equivalent fractions

Good morning Year 5! I hope you are well and had a lovely 3 day weekend? Did you do anything fun? I went for a lovely bike ride over to Hackney Marshes yesterday, did some planting in our garden, and baked some bread.

So this week I thought it would be a good idea to go back to basics with fractions. We are going to do it every day this week sp that we can try to get back to the level we were at before school closed.

First, watch this video:

So we know that the denominator is how many parts there are in total, and the numerator is how many parts of the total.

To find equivalent fractions we can either multiply or divide. The 2 rules we can't forget are:

1. The denominators have to be the same
2. Whatever we do to the denominator we do to the numerator.

Look at these fractions below. First, we need to make the denominators the same. so we divide by 3.

Then, because we divided the denominator, we now divide the numerator by the SAME number, which was 3.

These are equivalent fractions.

Now try with these.

Synonyms and Antonyms challenge

So we know that synonyms are different words SAME  meaning and antonyms are  words with the opposite meaning.

Inverse operations

I know that some of you are great at your times tables but struggle a little bit when it comes to dividing. But really they are just opposites of each other, this means they are inverse operations. For example:

I know that 5 x 6 = 30, so this means that 30 ÷ 6 = 5

I know that 4 x 3 = 12, so this means that 12 ÷ 3 = 4
