Writing task- Recipes

With all the extra time we now have, I've decided to do some baking (which I'm not very good at) to help enhance my culinary skill set - trying to make my dad proud!

Unless you are a bit of a Jamie Oliver in the kitchen, recipes are essential to successful cooking. So I would like you to think of something you would like to make and then write a recipe for it. With this, we can create our own Year 5 recipe cookbook.

Here is the recipe for my VEGAN BANOFFE PIE (picture at the bottom) :

Ingredients

base
154 g cookies (vegan)
tbsp of oats
70 g of  vegan butter (melted)
Coconut caramel sauce
300ml of coconut milk
100g sugar
pinch of salt
filling
1-2 bananas
200 ml of vegan whipped cream cold
Instructions

  • We start with the caramel sauce because it still has to cool down.
  • Bring coconut milk to a boil and stir in the sugar. Place in medium heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Keep stirring. The mass gets thicker with time.
  • Fill in a glass and let it cool.
  • Now for the base. Add cookies and oats to the food processor and mix well. Add butter and pinch of salt and mix to a crumbly mass.
  • Press the crumbs in the bottom of the baking tin and press it up along the sides. Chill the crust until firm.
  • Remove the tart from the fridge and carefully remove it from the tin.
  • Pour the caramel sauce over the crust. Top with banana slices. Beat the cream very lightly about 4 minutes or until stiff peaks form. Spread on the banana slices. Sprinkle with grated chocolate and chill until served.
  • Sit back and enjoy the meal!

What Adults Can Learn from Kids

Good morning Year 5,

To make the best use of my time indoors, I've decided to set myself a target of watching or reading at least one educational journal, talk, podcast or video every day.

Whilst doing so, I came across this very inspirational talk which I think some of you would enjoy and hopefully can take away something from it. The speaker, by the way, was only 12 at the time of this event.

Which key features does she include in her speech that we have been practicing in debating? Enunciation is definitely one of them!

Malala Yousafzai Quiz

Using what we learned in class so far, how well do you think you can do in this online quiz?

Post your score in the comments section.

Malala Yousafzai

I'm SO  gutted that school closed just as we began our learning on Malala and the incredible work she has done for children's rights and girls' education. There really is so much more we can learn from her and that we will continue to in the future.

We never got the chance to watch her full acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize which she won in 2014.

I'd love for you to give it a watch and write a response to what lessons we can learn from her.

Personally, I find watching the speech very emotional and moving and she teaches me that knowledge is power and that if I want to make a difference in this world I first have to educate myself on the subject I want to have an impact on so that I can be taken seriously.

Many of you know I'm an advocate for sustainability and climate change. I can only talk passionately about it, using facts and case studies because I have acquired the knowledge myself.

Learning doesn't need to come from your teachers or parents or siblings. Learning comes from you!

Telling the time

Happy Monday Year 5!

I hope you all had a great weekend and feel rested for the week ahead of you - lots of work to still be doing!

We really have come so far this year on our ability to tell the time and I would hate for you to lose all that amazing learning.

Use this link to test yourself - it's the one we used in class: https://www.visnos.com/demos/clock

Once you are feeling confident try these questions below.

Fantastic Fractions

Now, I know you are all missing fractions like crazy so I thought I'd post a couple of interactive activities for you to try. Let me know how you are getting on in the comments and I can help you as best I can if you get a little bit stuck. #itsfractionsfriday #fractionsforevs

Short division / Bus stop method

After reviewing our recent assessments, I could see that we all need to go over the bus stop method for division.

As I can't show you myself right now ( but I will be doing tutorials as of next week) use this video to help you practise.

If you are feeling confident, pause the video and try the next questions before the narrator does and then check to see if you have got the answer right.

Once you watched the video try these questions:

a) 315 ÷ 5 =
b 288 ÷ 3 =
c) 684 ÷ 2 =
d) 528 ÷ 4 =
e) 717 ÷ 3 =
f)  895 ÷ 5 =

Challenge question:

I will be sharing answers on Monday!!

Lots of love - Miss Oner

Morning Meditation

Good morning Year 5.

The luxury of more time allows us to do things in our daily routines that we wouldn't normally do.

This morning I began my day with a 10-minute meditation and it has really made me want to make the most of the day and be productive!

So many of you are amazing at meditating in class, so I thought I would share with you this video to try at home. Find somewhere quiet, sit comfortably, deep breathe in and enjoy! - Miss Oner

Reading +

Well done to all the students that are keeping up with their Reading +. WOW  - you make me so proud! I am monitoring your activity every day (I see everything) and am SO impressed with the children completing 100% of their tasks. You should be using it at least every 2 days on top of reading books. Remember what I always say: Reading.Makes.You.Smarter   #factsonly #yougotthis

P.E at home

Exercise is key to a healthy mind and a healthy body! You should be keeping fit and energised as much as possible! It's important to keep your heart rate up and move your body as much as possible!

Watch this video and let me know if you complete it without stopping! (obviously, I aced it!)

All the best - Miss Oner

Diary Writing

Hello lovely Year 5s!

I hope you are all staying safe indoors and remaining positive about these uncertain times.

It feels so strange to not know what you are doing on a day-to-day basis and I would love for you to keep a diary (a little bit like Dollie's) so that when I do see you again I can read about what you have been up to. Though I'm aware your options are limited on things to do, recording your thoughts, feelings, and emotions during this time would be both helpful for me and for yourselves.

The entries don't have to be very long and might look a little like mine below:

Dear diary,

Oh how I miss my class! Not seeing their smiling faces and hearing their laughs every day has been really tough for me but I try to remember all the great memories we had so far this year and am positive there will be more to be made with them.

I really hope they are doing their daily reading and using this time to support one another, as well as connect on new levels with their family members (not just using Tik Tok).

It is important to stay fit during these times, so I have been exercising twice a day and am enjoying the time to read more books.

Got to go - lots of work to do - speak soon!

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Earlier this year, we learned about fractions, decimals and percentages. We knew about decimals and fractions from Year 4, however, we learned about percentages.

Per cent means 'per 100'. If 70 per cent of the population own a pet, this means that 70 out of every hundred people own a pet. The symbol % means 'per cent'.

Have a look at the video below to remind yourself about converting between fractions, decimals and percentages.

And now have a look at this grid - which two pairs match.

Let's do one together...
I know that 0.8 is a decimal and it means 8 tenths (remember your place value). It I then convert my fraction from tenths to hundredths, what do I need to do? You're right, I need to multiply the numerator and the denominator by 10. Which will give me … 80/100 which is equivalent to 80%!

The aim of this game is to match pairs of cards. Click on a card in the interactive game on the NRich website to turn it over. Then click on another one. If the two cards match, they will stay face-up. If the two cards do not match, they will return to being face-down. The game ends when all the cards have been matched in pairs.

Grammarsaurus

Grammarsaurus is a website that provides resources for teaching Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation to help children develop their writing skills. They have created a free home-learning pack focused on writing for children in Years 5 and 6. Click the link below to download a PDF with some ideas for idea generation, grammar practice and writing templates. If you don't have a printer at home, you can copy these into the books that you received from school.

How did you get on? Send pictures of your writing to debeauvoirprimaryschool@gmail.com.
